What To Wear: It depends when you go and what you’re planning to do once you get there. The CNC has over 2.5 miles of hiking trails. Will you be hiking, canoeing, or zip lining? A safe bet is to bring clothing you can layer, shorts and t-shirts during spring and summer with closed-toe shoes at all times. The CNC is home to hundreds of native butterflies, and dozens of species of native Georgia raptors and reptiles. Yikes!
What To Bring: Bug spray, sunblock, and plenty of water, especially in the summer.
- We visited the Chattahoochee Nature Center or CNC the first week of August to catch the last day of their annual Butterfly Expedition. The expedition runs from June through the first week of August, and I strongly recommend that you visit early in the season as most of the butterflies were gone by the time we got there.
2. Explore. We spent our day exploring nature!
3. The CNC has animals in rehabilitation to see, but we prefer seeing them in the wild. Check out the Eastern Box turtle, the only land turtle in the northern half of Georgia! Did you know that they can live more than 75 years?
4. Put your cameras away for a moment and take in the fresh air. Unplug and unwind; let time standstill. And if you’re up for it, bring your yoga mats and release some stress. Studies show that yoga helps children manage their anxiety, improve their emotional regulation, and mindfulness, as well as enhance their concentration.
5. So head out, get some natural vitamin D, burn some calories and enjoy the day. Bring a picnic basket (there are clean bathrooms nearby) and don’t forget to visit the nature store where you can find snacks, guides and the perfect souvenir to take home!
